Two words that sound the same and are spelled the same (for example, rose the flower and rose the past tense of rise) are homophones, homographs and homonyms. Words that sound the same but are spelled differently are homophones and homonyms, but not homographs. To put this another way: homophones are only homonyms if they're spelled differently. This is clearly a minefield for the quizzer.
